A one-day itinerary to experience how Japanese washi-paper and soba are made, taste sake, and more!
Route
The washi paper-making craft of Nasu-Karasuyama has a long history. Visit the paper-making studios, learn about Karasuyama washi and try making your own. Don’t forget to bring some home as souvenirs!
Booking required.
Visit Shogetsuan Restaurant for their famous soba noodles, freshly made in the restaurant.
Shogetsuan also offers soba cooking classes to overseas travelers, so why not book a class while you are in Nasu-Karasuyama?
Visit Shimazaki Sake Brewery and book a tour of the cave, where their award-wining sake is aged. Then have a private sake tasting session in the brewery’s VIP room!
Legend has it that there is a large snake (dragon?) that lives in the waterfall. Hence the name Ryumon (Dragon Gate) Waterfall!
There is a path you can take which will lead you to the bottom of the waterfall.
Use local Karasuyama washi-paper to make a one-of-a-kind sake label, which you can put on your very own sake bottle!
Back at Shimazaki Brewery, it is time to taste some sake. If you booked a brewery tour, a special sake tasting session in the VIP room is waiting for you!
Let the ‘Umami’ explode in your mouth. Visit this popular Steakhouse, where delicious dishes are paired with Shimazaki Sake Brewery’s award-winning sake.
Yamaage Festival in Nasu-Karasuyama is a UNESCO registered Kabuki festival. Once a year, the town transforms into an outdoor stage. Visit Yamaage Kaikan to learn more.
Go fishing! Visit a Yana, a bamboo platform run by locals where people can come and catch Ayu fish. There is a restaurant beside the Yana where you can cook the fish you catch.
Kamameshi Kasai is a popular restaurant in the area that serves Kamameshi, a traditional Japanese rice dish cooked in an iron pot.
Enjoy an exclusive sake dinner in Shimazaki Sake Brewery's VIP room!
